Dear XXX,
I am an Iranian-Australian.
Given the urgency of the ongoing conflict in Iran, you may be required to debate or vote on related matters, or to provide commentary and information to the mediayou’re your constituents.
In that context, I would like to share a few points about the situation in Iran and how my family and friends there view the current conflict. I hope you may find this information helpful.
- Over the past 47 years, Iranians have tried different approaches to deal with the regime and turn it into a normal government: cooperation, reform, civil disobedience, peaceful protests, and more. These efforts have all failed.
- An overwhelming majority of Iranians now regard the regime as an occupying force. The regime, in turn, kills and tortures for “waging war against Allah”. In other words, a lethal war between my unarmed family and the armed regime long pre-dated the current military action.
- Following the massacre of over 40,000 protesters within 36 hours in 8-9 January 2026, Iranians recognised the necessity of urgent international military assistance to overthrow the regime. The diaspora amplifies their voices.
- The primary concern among the Iranians is a premature end of the bombing campaign, before the regime is sufficiently weakened, or ideally destroyed.
- The United States and Israel have been targeting the top leadership, the IRGC, Basij, and other repression forces that were instrumental in orchestrating the January 2026 massacre. Civilians are not the targets of these attacks although collateral damage is occasionally reported.
- Everyday life continues to the extent possible. People have minimized travel, but still have access to food, water, and electricity. The Internet, however, has been almost completely shut down nationwide by the regime to enable its propaganda.
- Iranians want a secular democracy that protects Iran’s diverse population and its territorial integrity.
Below, I have collected a number of X posts from accounts located in Iran, verified by their X app public information. They support the points I made above.
